One of the four Lions guarding the Bridge of Kasr el Nil. The bridge links Downtown Cairo with the island district of Zamalek. The bridge was constructed early in the 20th century. The Lions were sculpted by a French sculptor. The sculptor was facing the death penalty in France. King Farouk, King of Egypt, made a deal with the French government. If the sculptor succees in sculpting four accurate and identical Lions for his bridge, he will set him free. If he fails, he will execute the sculptor. After finishing the sculptures, King Farouk executed the sculptor. The reason: The Lions have no whiskers.
